Commentary on the False Claim that the TLM is Divisive

In Brief

Bishop Michael T. Martin, citing Traditionis Custodes, restricted the Traditional Latin Mass, believing that having two forms of the Roman Rite caused division. Pope Francis, after surveying bishops about Summorum Pontificum, claimed the results showed division and justified tighter controls.

However, journalist Diane Montagna’s review of the official Vatican survey found most bishops were satisfied with the Traditional Latin Mass. Key findings included:

  • Most bishops saw positive results and unity where the Mass was embraced.

  • Suppressing Summorum Pontificum was widely seen as harmful and divisive.

  • Young people and vocations were notably attracted to the Traditional Latin Mass.

  • The report recommended both forms be taught in seminaries and concluded, “Let the people be free to choose.”

In summary, the survey showed broad satisfaction and warned against restricting the Traditional Latin Mass, contrary to the narrative presented by Pope Francis.
